A Good Cause

Here's a little story. About a year ago, we told our families about the possible diagnosis of Angelman Syndrome for our little Evan. That same week, Pop happened to be going to Chicago for a visit of friends and for the electric car club(sorry, I don't remember the name of it). Before leaving, Mom started doing some research on Angelman Syndrome and found the Angelman Syndrome Foundation website(link is located on the right) where she learned that they would be holding their annual walkathon that same Saturday that Pop would be near Chicago. If you know my mother, you'll know that she then invited herself on Pop's trip and visited the walkathon site and learned a lot about Angelmans by meeting different people and families within this new culture.

Well, while we are still trying to learn about the syndrome, we decided that we would take part in this year's annual national walkathon. It takes place on the same day in several cities nationwide and this year, for the first time, one will be held in Utah. This is their one big fundraiser for the year, but I'm more interested in attending the walk itself and meeting other individuals with the same condition as Evan. The walk will be on May 16th in Layton, UT.

Angelman Syndrome is such a rare condition and there is a lot of research that is being done on it that this foundation helps to fund. More importantly, the foundation provides a good resource for families that have a loved one with the syndrome to rely on and ask questions of and connect with others. Even if we haven't taken full advantage of the foundation, I believe it will be a big help to us as Evan gets older, because while there are challenges to raising him right now, he's also a two year old in our minds and what two year old is easy to raise?
