Our big adventure on Wednesday was a planned snorkeling trip to Molokini Island, a State Wildlife Preserve. It was a short little trip that started after breakfast and ended by lunch time. We booked the trip through the Pacific Whale Foundation. On top of snorkeling and enjoying the scenery it helped us be a little more educated about Hawaii/Maui/the ocean, etc. It was a beautiful 50 minute boat ride to the island. Molokini is a tiny island between Maui and kaho’olawe. It is the top of a cresent shaped volcanic crater sticking up out of the ocean about 150 feet. In the middle of the crater (which is underwater) is now a beautiful reef. As a bonus, the above water part of the island is home to some pretty cool birds.
Snorkeling is fun! (Who knew?) We rented a waterproof digital camera to enjoy taking pictures of the fish we saw…and each other underwater. After getting accustomed to the salt water, the buoyancy of the salt water, and breathing underwater through a tube (a first for Megan), it was a lot of fun to explore the small reef next to the island. It was over much too quickly and we were heading back to the port at Ma’alaea.
Then we spent the afternoon relaxing. A little souvenir shopping, a little bird watching of the Hawaiian birds at the Kealia Pond, and a little nap at our condo. Then we realized we should get out and watch the sunset, walk along the beach, and eat dinner at a restaurant down the street. A very relaxing day all around.
